Just a guess but maybe this carved box was a gift for a new mother. It's the size of a cigar box. Maybe it was a cigar box. The inside is covered with satin fabric.

Just a guess but maybe this carved box was a gift for a new mother. It's the size of a cigar box. Maybe it was a cigar box. The inside is covered with satin fabric.

Didn't new fathers used to hand out cigars? Or was that only in the movies? If they did, then it would make sense for this to be a cigar box for celebratory cigar-giving-out.
