Pancho Gonzales by Justin McCarthy
Justin McCarthy (d. 1977) was a Pennsylvania vegetable grower and seller who for years painted obsessively in obscurity before achieving recognition in the 1960s. The artists and collectors Dorothy and Sterling Strauser brought McCarthy's work to the fore after seeing his paintings at an outdoor show. Celebrities like Pancho Gonzales were a favorite subject of McCarthy's. Gonzales (d. 1995) was the world's top tennis player in the late 1950s, early 1960s. Artnet has an excellent article on McCarthy. He's one of those artists who probably deserves more acclaim.

Found object
I'm calling this carving a found object because it was found today behind a family photo on a mantel, where it had been for quite some time, forgotten. I don't remember where the heck I got this thing, but I'm guessing some outdoor show like Brimfield. An interesting detail: Above the left eye is a heart-shaped indentation. Did the carver make that? I don't know.

Sister Gertrude Morgan ark painting
Sister Gertrude Morgan was a colorful minister, musician and artist who preached in New Orleans in the 1960s and 70s. She wore a Bride of Christ white outfit. Morgan died in 1980. The painting here, showing Noah's Ark resting on the Mountains of Ararat, has been in the same family for 28 years and was just consigned to Candler Arts. Note that Sister Gertrude is standing at the bow. The painting was part of a 1988 show of naive art at the Midwest Museum of American Art.
